about

The banjo has its roots in Africa and was originally a fretless gut-stringed gourd instrument not unlike the kora or ngoni. These instruments were played by the nomadic griot clans who shared stories, history and genealogies through music and song. The forerunner of the banjo made its way to America during the early days of slavery and after many years became what it is today.
